MercyCare Cannington

The MercyCare Cannington project presents a rare opportunity to deliver a holistic, future-focused approach to community healthcare design in Perth. Since the site is in an early stage of development, MercyCare can bring its people, services, and values together under one integrated campus. Additionally, the emerging vision reflects MercyCare’s core values of love, hope, and courage through a genuinely inclusive, community-centred built environment.

Moreover, MKDC supported MercyCare in transitioning from traditional pastoral care to a broader, spiritually informed model. The design acknowledges the spirit of the land and the significance of its Aboriginal heritage. This is achieved through carefully selected materials and the thoughtful placement of sacred and reflective spaces. In this way, the site’s history is honoured while fostering cultural respect and connection. At the same time, the project embeds MercyCare’s Catholic foundation in the campus’s planning and design.

Acting as a client advocate, MKDC adopted an “inside-out” design approach during the early planning phases. Consequently, the environment prioritises people and supports the integration of life-enhancing services. These include a multi-service community hub, expansive intergenerational gardens, and an adjacent urban stream that enhances wellbeing and connection to nature.

The upper levels will house an early learning centre alongside a 108-bed residential aged care facility. Together, these services reflect best practice in aged care facility design and intergenerational planning. They strengthen community ties while supporting dignity, care, and continuity across all life stages.

Finally, this healthcare architecture project in Perth is a joint venture with MJA Studio. MKDC recognises MJA Studio for their architectural leadership and for producing the project renders.
