St Bart’s

MKDC undertook an initial feasibility study to support St Barts’ Lotterywest funding application for a major refurbishment project. Following a successful outcome, MKDC was appointed as Lead Consultant for the St Barts East Perth refurbishment.

The project aimed to enhance the operational, living, and workplace environments at the Lime Street facility. It was complex because St Barts remained fully operational throughout the refurbishment, continuing to provide essential services for vulnerable people experiencing homelessness, as well as supporting aged care, community housing, and corporate office functions – all within the same site.

Key improvements focused on the front-of-house areas, including a warm and welcoming reception designed with Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles. MKDC created culturally safe spaces where consumers could meet with staff and outreach service providers. The consumer courtyards were revitalized with a yarning circle, new paving, upgraded lighting, improved security, and refurbished community kitchens. Additional upgrades were implemented on every floor to enhance accessibility and comfort.

For St Barts staff, MKDC delivered a refurbished workplace that fosters collaboration, interaction, and growth. The upgraded office supports efficient workflows and encourages a positive, engaging work environment.

This successful St Barts refurbishment project has significantly improved the Lime Street facility for both staff and consumers. By combining thoughtful interior design, functional workplace planning, and community-focused upgrades, MKDC helped transform the site into a modern, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
