As the Designers for the new and innovative South Hub in Murdoch, MKDC embraced this exciting opportunity to create an enabling, inspiring and empowering environment for Ability WA’s staff and customers. This project, which will positively impact the community, is a testament to our commitment to social responsibility.
The brief for this iconic project was to create seamless pathways for people of all ages and abilities to have choices when utilising the space. The Hub incorporates a gym, multiple therapy rooms, a fully interactive and accessible kitchen, a changing places facility, and a children’s wet play area.
The design team, in addition to focusing on robust and timeless finishes, good levels of contrast, and access to natural light for both customers and staff, also integrated Ability icons throughout the design. These elements, particularly the astronaut featured at the entry to the gym, added a great level of fun and whimsy to the design.
For Ability WA staff, we implemented an agile workspace with sit-to-stand desks, lockers, and a great staff hub, giving them a place to retreat for lunch. MKDC and Ability WA worked closely together throughout the project to ensure that we were creating a truly inspiring new facility.
