The Department of Education Atrium

The Central Atrium office design at the Department of Education Headquarters in East Perth creates a dynamic, collaborative, and wellness-focused workplace for staff. This office design encourages employees to meet, connect, and take a brief retreat from their regular workstations, supporting wellbeing and engagement. It also reflects the department’s ambition to attract young, talented professionals by showcasing a modern, inspiring, and adaptable environment.

MKDC designed flexible and adaptive office spaces with minimal fixed elements, enabling the Atrium to evolve alongside the department’s needs. Technology was seamlessly integrated, ensuring the space remains future-ready, with interactive displays, digital collaboration tools, and smart room-booking systems.

The Atrium layout includes strategically positioned pavilions that create focused meeting areas away from the main open space. These areas accommodate groups of varying sizes, providing multiple settings with different levels of technology. This design encourages collaboration, productivity, and creativity across teams.

In addition, biophilic elements, natural lighting, and thoughtful finishes enhance the workplace atmosphere, creating a calm and welcoming environment. Staff can use the Atrium for informal meetings, individual focus, or group collaboration, supporting diverse ways of working.
